News – SmartFrame by Tilling

The builder of the project is Merkon Constructions and Richmond Mitre 10 supplied the timber. The Plant room spans 25mt by 25mt and is being used as storage for the Westgate Tunnel project. The trafficable ceiling is a temporary installation, which has been installed and designed for staff to be able to move freely above the Plant Room.

Tilling introduces Red Alert Wall LVL 12 to product range

The Red Alert Wall LVL 12 has been introduced to the Tilling SmartFrame range and can provide the stability benefit that builders need. There is a segment of premium and commercial builders that are demanding high quality framing in more challenging structural applications. The stability LVL 12 provides means that the need for packing and straightening during the build is eliminated. Builders who place high importance on time priority prefer Red Alert Wall because it’s very specific properties provide significant time saving benefits.

Red Alert Wall can be a complete replacement of MGP 10 and MGP 12 and its increased capacity may allow for wider stud spacing and smaller jamb studs. These remarkable benefits mean that the use of LVL in place of pine framing in projects has the potential to be cost neutral.

Leon Quinn, National Sales and Marketing Manager says, “Whilst the Red Alert Wall LVL 12 will always be at a higher price point than softwood framing there is no doubt some builders have a need for higher performing, more stable, engineered framing, and don’t mind paying a premium for this.”

Stokes St Time Lapse

Released for construction at 40% design, Tilling SmartFrame’s design team worked extensively with builder, S.J. Higgins, and the merchant, Big River Group, to achieve this impressive construction. All design requirements were met, including structural, environmental, acoustic and fire.

This project used multiple products from the extensive SmartFrame range…

SmartLVL15 for lower wall studs, supporting increased mid-rise loads
SmartJoist and TecBeam for floor joists and roof, supporting large spans and loads
Glue Laminated and SmartLVL19 for beams, replacing steel where possible and reducing carbon footprint

Ameling Rise

An incredibly challenging site, Ameling featured difficult access with a narrow uphill drive and a unique limestone outcrop through the block that the client wanted to keep as a feature. To construct a three storey home using a brick and concrete solution would have taken 2 years – which was not feasible for the client.

Vicore Construction instead chose a lightweight timber solution, using Tilling SmartFrame’s range of SmartJoist and TecBeam products for floors throughout. As Daniel says “Smartjoist is a quick and easy product to use” and SmartFrame worked with the timber merchant to make the job even easier with a cut to length solution for SmartJoist.

The residence is a striking modern piece over three levels, featuring a large open plan space for the Living/Dining/Kitchen area. The spans required here meant that TecBeam was the ideal product to use for the Penthouse ensuite directly above. A 246mm TecBeam floor joist was used here to handle the loads associated with wet area screed and tiles plus a freestanding bath – all while maintaining the overall 300mm floor depth for the entire Penthouse area. The holes in TecBeam were also used for the ensuite services.

Both Daniel and the client were delighted with the 10 month build time. As Daniel says “10 months is a really good build time for a three storey home. We wouldn’t have been able to do this unless using lightweight timber.”
